Laura Axelrod is a writer, filmmaker and actor.Laura Axelrod

She recently wrote, directed and narrated the documentary, “Becoming Colonel Cullmann.” The film explores historical re-enactors and why one man portrays a town’s founder. It was screened at Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham in 2014. The film is still making its way around the film festival circuit.

She was curator at The Clyde Fitch Report, a site that focuses on politics and the arts. Laura interviewed influential leaders and tied personal experiences to current events.  She also created and curated The Marbury Project, a column that explored gender inequality and the arts.

Her entertainment articles and book reviews have appeared in The Birmingham News (Ala) and al.com, Alabama’s largest newsgathering site. Newhouse News Service distributed her reviews, which were subsequently published by The Houston Chronicle, The Seattle Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Grand Rapids Press and other newspapers across the country.

Her stage plays have been performed in California, New York and Europe. Her play, “Everybody in This House” is available through Original Works Publishing. Reviewed by The Stage, the play was called “superbly written” and “totally uncompromising”.

Her play, “Searching for the Sign,” was read at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in 2013. The play also received honorable mention in the American Blues Theater 2013 Blue Ink Contest.

Laura’s experimental storytelling was also showcased through her blog, Project 1968. The site featured daily blog entries in the voices of three female characters as they experienced events from that pivotal year. She also interviewed noted authors and developed news summaries to give background information. Educause, a nonprofit that assists higher education IT professionals, cited Project 1968 as an example of a new genre, Web 2.0 Storytelling.

She studied at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, receiving her MFA and BFA in Dramatic Writing. She was awarded the John L. Golden Award for Playwright with Most Potential and the Rod Marriott Senior Playwriting Award. She is a member of The Dramatists Guild.
